Dec 3, 2013
SEATTLE, Dec. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Zillow Digs announces the top kitchen remodeling trends for 2014. Kitchens featuring black countertops, open shelves or glass-front cabinets and darker paint tones will be popular with homeowners next year, according to Zillow Digs Home Design Trend Report for 2014. Additionally, kitchens top the list of spaces homeowners plan to remodel this coming yeari.
The Zillow Digs Home Design Trend Report is based on the most popular kitchen photos on Zillow Digs, where homeowners can browse more than 130,000 pictures of interiors and exteriors, organized by space, style, cost and color. The one-of-a-kind trend report depends on homeowners to identify trends, and includes a survey of members of the Zillow Digs Board of Designersii. In addition to allowing users to browse photos, Zillow Digs includes the proprietary Digs Estimates for the estimated cost of the actual bathrooms and kitchens, by region.
The top kitchen trends for 2014 are:
Black Counters: Black kitchen counters will be all the rage next year, with homeowners looking to add sophistication to their kitchen. Popular materials to achieve this look will include black granite and quartz. Zillow Digs Board of Designers Member, Adam Hunter of Adam Hunter, Inc. in West Hollywood, Calif., likes "black granite that is honed or has a leather finish" to provide a tasteful, yet dramatic look. Expect to see black countered-kitchens paired with a lighter counter such as marble or light gray for contrast.
Open Shelves and Glass-front Cabinets: Displaying kitchen wares is a growing trend among all kitchen types, not just contemporary and traditional farmhouse kitchens. Zillow Digs Board of Designers Member Kerrie Kelly of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab in Sacramento, Calif., says, "As the kitchen has become a central meeting place for family and friends, presentation has become a priority for many homeowners. It is now fashionable to display almost everything in the kitchen — from dishes to pots and pans to gourmet oils and vinegars."
Darker Paint Tones: Homeowners identified black, deep brown and dark red and copper tones as some of the most popular paint colors on Zillow Digs. Since dark colors may make a space feel smaller, designers recommend painting just one wall a deep shade, or consider painting the ceiling or floor.
In addition to finding visual inspiration for design ideas and understanding the real cost of remodeling projects , Zillow Digs users can create, save and share boards of ideas and decor they love, and browse nearly 200,000 boards created by others, comment on photos and follow people with similar interests. i These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted Nov. 7 - 8, 2013. For the survey, a nationally representative sample of 2,064 randomly-selected adults aged 18 and older residing in the United States was interviewed via Ipsos' U.S. online omnibus. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate within +/-2.2 percentage points 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire population of adults in the United States been polled. The margin of error will be larger within sub-groupings of the survey population. The sub-group of homeowners in the sample is 1,376, which has a margin of error of +/-2.6 percentage points. These data were weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/gender composition reflects that of the actual U.S. population according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
ii The Zillow Digs Board of Designers survey was conducted via SurveyMonkey between Nov. 15 - 22, 2013.
